The impact that integrated facilities planning has on institutional effectiveness, the degree to which a university is meeting its stated mission.
The effectiveness of an institution is not captured in what is taught and how, but rather in what students have learned at an institution. Therefore, the campus environment should not only align with the mission, vision, and values of an institution, but the planning for it should also be continuous, integrated and holistic. Campus master planning, facility planning and design, annual programmatic renovation projects, and corrective maintenance are all integral components and are typically planned and implemented independently with perhaps only the top level administrators connecting the dots to ensure alignment with one another. With a simple yet difficult paradigm shift that focuses on an institutional culture of continuous integrated planning and budgeting, a flexible implementation strategy and a team of administrators who effectively manage to their role, the impact can transform the campus’ environment, directly impacting the student experience and outcomes.
