Safeguarding Silence and Solitude
In a lowland in Denmark, Wisconsin, balanced among hills that frame the western shore of Lake Michigan, lies a monastery home to a cloistered community of Carmelite nuns. Performa designed the three-floor masonry structure faithful to the ideal of early Christian architecture. It features brick and stone veneers, as well as arched openings and windows reflective of 12th century architecture. Featured pediments include three tents over the chapel and a bell tower over the interior stone stairway.
Brick arches with barrel-vaulted ceilings highlight the interior along with a marble sanctuary, several courtyards, and a public chapel. There are also accommodations for community with separate clergy and visitors’ quarters.
